June 14, 2014, was a proud day for both Olson’s Martial Arts Academy and The AMAI as Master Amanda Olson earns her 8th Degree Black Belt. She and her brother, Master Kevin Mathis, tested together at the Fort Walton Beach National Tournament.
Master Olson trained hard in the months leading up to her test. Son Keith Olson held Master Training Sessions on Tuesday nights. Students from Olson’s Martial Arts Academy joined in to train with her and encourage her on the journey to this lifetime achievement and were treated to pre-test demonstrations of her form and board breaks.
During Master Olson’s test, she performed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Degree forms followed by the Sr. Wisdom form. She kept it in the family as she sparred Keith Olson and then her nephew, Kameron Mathis. She finished with a series of board breaks, with the boards being held by family members as well as students she has enjoyed working with for years.
It was a proud moment for Master Olson’s entire family as her father, Master Chick Mathis, tied on both her and Master Kevin Mathis’ new belts, while husband, Master Glenn Olson, and daughter, Katie Olson, watched the ceremony in awe of her achievement.
